Here is what happens when a black wife is going through menopause and neither she nor her husband understands what is happening.
She pulls away. Not because she stopped loving him. Because she does not have words for what she is feeling and she is ashamed to admit that something is wrong.
He gets confused. He does not know why she is different. He does not know why she is more irritable, less engaged, more emotional, or less interested in intimacy.
The silence between them grows.
And a marriage that was strong starts to feel distant. Not because the love is gone. Because information is missing.
Intimacy Takes the First Hit
Menopause affects physical intimacy in ways that are rarely discussed in faith communities. Lower estrogen levels can cause physical discomfort that makes intimacy painful. The hormonal shifts that create emotional numbness also reduce desire.
A wife who is experiencing this may feel shame, confusion, or guilt. She may pull away from physical connection entirely because she does not understand what is happening to her body. Her husband may interpret that withdrawal as rejection. Neither of them is wrong. Both of them are missing information.
The Emotional Labor Doubles
Black wives already carry a disproportionate amount of emotional labor in their marriages and households. Menopause increases the internal weight she is managing while simultaneously reducing her capacity to manage it.
She is doing more with less, emotionally speaking, and she is doing it without the language to explain why she is struggling.
This is why this conversation cannot wait.
