The Mental Wellness Crisis That Black Wives Are Living in Silence

The Symptoms Nobody Talks About

Hot flashes get the most attention. But the symptoms that disrupt black wives most deeply are the ones nobody names at the dinner table or in the women's ministry meeting.

Rage. Sudden, overwhelming anger that comes from nowhere and surprises the woman experiencing it as much as the people around her.

Emotional numbness. Feeling disconnected from the people and things she used to love.

A loss of desire, not just physical desire but the desire to engage, to create, to connect.

A creeping sense that she is disappearing. That the woman she used to be is slowly becoming someone she does not recognize.

These are not signs that she is a bad wife. They are signs that her body is asking for help.

You're invited to join us on July 23 @ 7pm EDT for The Uncommon Wife's Mental Wellness & Menopause for Black Wives event where our featured speaker will be Corporate Menopause Consultant Carleeka Basnight-Menendez!

Menopause is the natural transition that ends a woman's menstrual cycles. It is officially diagnosed after 12 consecutive months without a period. The years leading up to that moment are called perimenopause and they can start as early as a woman's late 30s.

This is not just a physical experience. Menopause triggers hormonal shifts that affect the brain directly.

Estrogen and progesterone are not just reproductive hormones. They regulate serotonin and dopamine, which are the chemicals responsible for mood, motivation, and emotional stability. When those hormone levels drop, the mental health impact is real and significant.

Symptoms That Affect Mental Wellness During Menopause

The mental and emotional symptoms of menopause include anxiety that appears out of nowhere, depression that feels like grief without a clear source, brain fog that makes it hard to focus or remember simple things, severe mood swings that feel out of proportion, sleep disruption that creates chronic exhaustion, irritability that damages relationships, and a loss of the sense of self that once felt stable.

For black women specifically, research published by the North American Menopause Society has found that we experience more frequent and more severe depressive symptoms during perimenopause than women of other racial groups.

There is also the concept of weathering, which describes how the chronic stress of being a black woman in America accelerates the physical and biological aging of our bodies. This means that many black women enter perimenopause in a state of accumulated stress and exhaustion that amplifies every symptom.

We are not starting this transition from a place of rest. We are starting it already running on empty.

Black women are not imagining it. We experience menopause harder. That is not weakness. That is the cost of carrying too much for too long.
